EVP Mistakes

I just finished watching one of the less watched paranormal shows and I see the same mistake again! Here someone is running around with a recorder trying to capture EVP's! This happens on nearly all these shows!  Time to bust some bubbles! If you want to get famous or be on TV, you'd have a much greater chance if you just grew a big butt and leaked a sex tape. Now, it you really want to do this, now is the time to learn before bad habits are formed.

   So what is sound?
Sound is made by creating audible vibrations that travel through matter and reach our eardrums. There are frequencies of sound that humans cannot hear. Now notice that sound travels. This means if you heard a noise, it was leaving from the source and traveling toward you. Without fail, all on these shows go in the direction in which the sound is moving, instead of the direction from which it came! Can you see the flaw here??? They can't find it because they're moving away from it. Not to mention, if one is using the microphone that is built into the device, the chances are great that either clothes or your own fingers will either cover or rub against it. Not to mention, the closer it is to one's own body, the more likely it is to pick up the normal sounds of the holder. Now this is fine if you wish to scare your friends so try to be a "youtube" hit, but it simply isn't practical if you are trying to prove or disprove something to a public that thinks it's a waste of time already. The speed of sound depends on the medium in which it travels. In general, sound travels faster through solids than through liquids or gases. Also, the denser the medium, the slower sound will travel through it. The same sound will travel at a different speed on a cold day than it would on a warm day.

The best way to get a good recording it either place the recorded in the middle of the room, which may make it hard to judge direction, or, place a different microphone in each corner of the room. Yes, more cost and more effort but better results.
