A video shot in a remote Russian woodland showed what appeared to be the fabled hairy beast - leading to claims the Abominable Snowman had been caught.
Reports in the country – which is notorious for strange Yeti and UFO sightings – then said the creature was being held by the secret service. The country has had a large number of sightings of both in the last several years. The Russian government official also confirmed a live female Yeti had been captured after the footage showed the beast attacking a sheep and then running away.
But as news of the incredible sighting spread across Russia and the video went viral on internet – including YouTube — the story was exposed as a hoax. The Federal Security Bureau was forced to investigate the claims but denied it had caught the beast. An FSB official said: "News agencies distributed the information without checking the facts. It's a hoax.
"No such creature has been found here." And as always the views differ even behind whats left of the "Iron Curtain." We can trust them given their history of "sharing" information, right?
Mr Marshani, Minister of Labour and Social Development in southern Russian republic Ingushetia, reportedly told a press conference that the hairy creature was spotted by a hunter as it grabbed a sheep near a village. An armed man once again and no shot was fired.
The hunter thought at first it was a bear but then claimed it stood upright and ran away on two legs. No speed was given so how could he be sure it wasn't a bear or an escaped primate of sorts?
Mr Marshani said: "The animal looks like a gorilla, two meters tall, dark colour, likely to be female, a very big creature. He did not say how the sex of the animal was determined. He went on to say that a wittiness reported that the beast fled waking upright on two legs. Many researcher's believe that the length of travel on two legs proves the sighting not to be a known primate or a bear. since both have a limited range on only two legs. Many held their breath in hopes of have another Patterson film on our hands, but it wasn't ment to be.
The footage went viral and led to Russian reports that the fabled creature had been captured.
But today Mr Marshini retracted his quotes, and claimed footage of the Yeti was a stunt to promote a national park in the region.
This garbage is one of the many reasons that researchers are the laughing stock of science. Now I've no issues if you wish to use it as a promotional tool as long as that intent is stated up front, but acts such as these do little more than inflict damage and nothing more. The world of science is a fowl game in which those who wish to leave and embrace the unknown are opened to scorn and the loss of any major funding for research. I've fought the system for over twenty-years and just when I think inroads are being made, the demon of "hoax" hits us with a rock.
